3 Ways to Help Students Calm Down

When students are very angry or upset, it can derail them and the whole class! Here are some ways to help them.

1. Distraction – sometimes all that is needed is another focus – ask them to do an errand for you or show them something cool.

2. Humour – tell a joke, pretend to slip and fall, pretend your sock puppet is the principal – a smile and some laughter go a long way.

3. Give them some control – give the student a choice – e.g. Would you like to go to the bathroom to calm down or stay here and take deep breaths?
