The main difference between substitute and full time teaching is that the occasional teacher needs to have effective classroom management skills without a previous relationship with the students and without the benefit of long term consequences for the students (e.g. report cards). That is why it is so important for the substitute teacher to quickly build a good rapport and relationship with the students. This is why I often tell ghost stories right after attendance! They loooooove ghost stories! (Just not too scary.)
