A lock down is what happens in a school when there is someone or something dangerous in or near the school. It could be a bear near the school (if you live near bears) or someone with a gun. When you hear over the announcement that it is a lockdown, here are the steps to take.

1. Shut and lock the door to the classroom. Be sure to check that you can lock the door at the beginning of the day. If you cannot, arrange with the teacher next door that if there is a lock down, you will bring your class to her classroom.
2. Shut the windows and close the blinds/curtains. Be sure the window on the classroom door is also covered.
3. Have the students keep out of sight, away from windows.
4. Make sure the students are quiet and do not move. You may have to explain to younger children that there are no bathroom breaks during this time and to make sure that they do not giggle. They will not understand the seriousness of the situation.
5. Stay hidden and quiet until the all-clear is given by the principal.
6. Be sure not to open the door to anyone claiming to be the principal or the police. They will have their own keys to open the door.
7. When it is done, debrief with the students about what happened, how they felt and what to do next time.
